The annual BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition is back in the RDS for 2025. Come visit QuakeShake and the DIAS Geophysics Section at Geological Survey Ireland’s stand in the Exhibit hall. We will have live streaming seismometers so you can make your own earthquake and listen to the sounds of the ocean with our our orca and hydrophone display.  Suitable for all ages.  We cant wait to see you there!

Boom, Bang, Splash!

Dive into the world of geohazards with your class. Boom, Bang, Splash! brings Earth’s geohazard events into focus 💥 Ignite your students’ curiosity about volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis!

Perfect for 4th, 5th, and 6th class primary school students.

If you missed this event you can rewatch it with your class on our YouTube channel by clicking the link below.

We will be hosting a public workshop in Letterkenny County Donegal on the 14th of November in the Station House Hotel during Science Week.

During this one-hour event, we will introduce you to the fascinating world of seismology and explain how you can contribute to the recording of local and global earthquakes right from your own home.
Approximately 20 seismometers will be raffled to participants interested in hosting them. Please note a MOU will need to be signed on the night.

This workshop will cover:

  • An introduction to QuakeShake and its goals.
  • How seismometers work and what data they collect.
  • What it means to host a seismometer in your home.

Registration: This event is free to attend, but spaces are limited. Please register on Eventbrite (click below) to reserve your spot.

Calling all Secondary School teachers! Quake Shake is happy to announce our 1st Teacher Workshop in collaboration with Laois Education Support Centre . Culture Night

Culture Night

Culture Night / Oíche Chultúir is a national moment, celebrating culture, creativity and the arts and seeks to actively promote the belief that this rich and varied culture is alive, treasured and nurtured in people’s lives, today and every day. It is delivered nationwide in cities, towns, villages and rural locations.

As part of culture night, DIAS geophysics section opens it doors to the public.  On September 20th 2024 come visit Quake Shake at 5 Merrion Square. More details to follow closer to the time.

OIDE Teacher Workshop

Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies (DIAS), in collaboration with Geological Survey Ireland and the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG), is pleased to announce a free online workshop open to all teachers. The workshop, titled “Earthquakes: Literally Earth Shattering News”, will take place on Tuesday, 19 March, as part of the Oide Creativity’s STE(A)M workshop series 2024. The workshop aims to provide teachers with innovative approaches to teaching the fundamentals of earthquakes. While it is primarily aimed at Junior Cycle teachers, the lesson is open to all and the lesson can be easily adapted for other levels. The session is designed to be inclusive, accommodating various learning styles, not just those oriented towards science.

STE(A)M, similar to STEM, refers to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. However, STE(A)M also incorporates the Arts. These workshops emphasize interdisciplinary responses to challenges in both specific subjects and cross-curricular contexts. This professional development opportunity is part of a series of workshops presented by the Creative Ireland Programme and Oide, intended to enhance teacher engagement with the arts and learning. The initiative is a continuation of a pilot partnership initiative between the Arts Council and JCT, which began in 2014.

You can download this workshop and other materials from our Activities pages here.

Quake Shake now part of Science Foundation Ireland's (SFI) Discover Programme.

We are pleased to announce Quake Shake is now part of Science Foundation Ireland’s (SFI) Discover Programme alongside 37 other projects which encourage understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Quake Shake is proud to receive funding from SFI to boost existing funding from Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) and Geological Survey Ireland (GSI). You can find the list of all the projects in the press release here.

Public Launch of Quake Shake

Quake Shake was officially launched on the 5th of December.  Click below to listen back to our interview with Brendan Courtney on RTE Radio 1s The Nine O Clock Show.

The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 10-13 January

Quake Shake and DIAS Geophysics attended at Geological Survey Irelands stand at the annual exhibition in the RDS. We enjoyed meeting you all there, answering your excellent questions and we witnessed a record number of ‘make your own earthquakes’. A highlight for us was seeing President Michael D Higgins in attendance at the exhibition.
