Quake Shake Privacy Notice

Introduction

Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) maintains the Quake Shake website, www.quakeshake.ie. This Privacy Notice provides you with information about how DIAS processes your personal data when you visit our website or otherwise make your data available to us in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Irish Data Protection Act 2018.

Who are we?

Quake Shake is an earthquake outreach programme co-funded by the Geophysics Section in DIAS, the Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). DIAS are the Data Controller for your data, and does not share your personal data with GSI or SFI.

Disclosure of your information

If you hold a Raspberry Shake device, you will be required to provide personal data to the device developer, Raspberry Shake. Raspberry Shake are an independent controller, and as such, are ultimately responsible for how your data is collected and used. Raspberry Shake’s privacy notice is available here.

 

DIAS also shares your personal data with third-party service providers, such as our website developers. We will only permit our service providers to process your personal data for specified purposes and in accordance with our instructions. Only the minimum personal data necessary will be shared.

 

We do not share your personal data with GSI and SFI.

Do we transfer your information outside of EEA?

In limited and necessary circumstances, your information may be transferred outside of the EEA or to an international organisation to comply with our legal or contractual requirements and only where we have determined that individuals have an adequate level of protection over their personal data.

Data Retention

We retain your information in accordance with our Data Retention Policy. Subject to your rights, we will ordinarily process your personal data throughout the course of your relationship with us and will then retain it for a period after that. The precise length of time will depend on the type of data, our legitimate interests and other legal or regulatory rules that may require us to retain it for certain minimum periods.

In determining the appropriate retention period for different types of personal data, the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the personal data in question, as well as the potential risk of harm from unauthorised use or disclosure of that personal data, the purposes for which we need to process it and whether we can achieve those purposes by other means are considered.

Cookies are a form of technology used in the delivery and analysis of a website. When you visit a website, small text files are placed on your device temporarily. DIAS only use cookies on quakeshake.ie for the purposes outlined in the table above.

 

Data security and storage of personal data

We use a range of physical, electronic, and managerial measures to ensure that we keep your personal data secure, accurate and up to date. These measures include education and training to relevant staff to ensure they are aware of our data protection obligations when processing personal data, administrative and technical controls to restrict access to personal data to a need to know basis, technological security measures, including firewalls, encryption, and anti-virus software; and physical security measures, such as restricted access to the building and locked cabinets and doors.

If you believe that we have not complied with the requirements of the GDPR or the Data Protection Act 18, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Irish Data Protection Supervisory Authority at dataprotection.ie or by post to 21 Fitzwilliams Square, Dublin 2, D02 RD28.

We will seek to deal with your request without undue delay, and in any event within one month (subject to any extensions to which we are lawfully entitled). Any request to access personal data will be dealt with free of charge unless it is considered excessive in which case, we may charge a reasonable fee.

We do not engage in fully automated decision making which has significant or legal effects on you in the provision of our services.
