Welcome to QuakeShake

QuakeShake is a vibrant community of citizen seismologists in Ireland. The programme is co- funded by Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI).

Our mission is to to engage Irish society to contribute to the observation and study of earthquakes in Ireland. Studying earthquakes helps us grasp the Earth’s dynamic and ever-changing nature by examining its ever evolving systems.

Why Are We Interested?

Earthquakes are undeniably fascinating natural phenomena and contrary to belief they do occur here in Ireland. Irish earthquakes are usually such a small magnitude that we don’t tend to feel them.

We detect approximately 20 Irish  earthquakes each year, of which the maximum magnitude recorded has been 2.5 on the Richter scale. There is no need to worry, earthquakes with such a low magnitude pose no danger to people or structures. We record not only Irish earthquakes but earthquakes occurring around the world. Earthquakes are a testament to the  complexity and unpredictability of our planet, making them a subject of enduring scientific curiosity and public interest.

About Earthquakes

Unearth the science behind earthquakes with engaging articles, infographics, and videos that break down complex concepts into easily digestible information.

Recent Earthquakes

We are currently studying earthquakes around the world. Our team is watching closely and measuring things like the strength and location of quakes to see how they may affect people and the environment. We want to give people accurate information about recent earthquakes so they can be prepared for them.
