Exercises
Raspberry Shake has developed three excellent ready-to-go lesson plans suitable for students over 12 years old. See here.
QuakeShake ran a workshop for Secondary School teachers titled ‘Teaching Earthquake Science in Geography, Physics, and Maths with Citizen Seismometers’.
The slides from this workshop include the following topics:
- Earth’s Interior and Layers
- What is an Earthquake?
- Causes and Effects of Earthquakes
- Types of Geological Faults
- Size of an Earthquake
- Types of Seismic Waves
- Slinky Exercises
- How do we Detect, Record and Locate Earthquakes?
- Recording Earthquakes with a Raspberry Shake
- “Locate the Epicenter of an Irish Earthquake’ Exercise (see more info and PDF’s below)
- How is QuakeShake Data Used?
This workshop was funded as part of Science Foundation Irelands Discover Programme.
The aim of this exercise is to locate the epicenter of an Irish earthquake using the recorded waveform data from Raspberry Shake seismometer stations in Ireland.
A Raspberry Shake is not necessary to complete this exercise.
This exercise is available for download in both colour and black and white versions. Please do not change the scaling of the print off worksheets.
This exercise is suitable for Secondary School students, especially Transition Year and CBA classes.
Earthquakes: Literally Earth-Shattering News
This workshops has been developed jointly by Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Geological Survey Ireland and iCRAG in partnership with Oide Creativity. This workshop is endorsed by Oide and was initially ran as a workshop for a CPD day.
This workshop is free to use and has been designed so that teachers can use the material themselves in the classroom. The presentation provides a general introduction to earthquakes and encourages students to produce their own News Report about a specific earthquake. Fact sheets are provided detailing four earthquakes. Teachers can encourage students to research their own earthquakes. Click below to download.
